Modern art will make you sick: Qantas turns sick bags into Instagram art

Qantas has found another use for its on-board sick bags. As part of a social media campaign created in house, Qantas wants passengers to get creative and turn sick bags into works of art.

Passengers can also scribble on their napkin or boarding pass and share the photos using the #qantasblankcanvas hashtag.

Qantas head of digital and entertainment Jo Boundy said the campaign was about inspiring Qantas passengers to get in touch with their creative side while in the air.

“From boarding passes to in-flight bags, napkins to luggage tags, we have a number of perfect blank canvases for passengers to create their own in-flight art. This campaign encourages our customers to get creative at 30,000 feet and will showcase their inspiring works through social media to a global audience,” she said.

The airline will share the most creative entries via its Instagram channel every Friday in May. Winners will receive a double Qantas Club pass.

The project was inspired by freelance typographer Gemma O’Brien who created hand-drawn pen and ink designs to pass the time during a flight from Sydney to Wellington.

It has collaborated with O'Brien to produce a series of custom designed bags inspired by her travels on Qantas. The latest depicts New York, which will be exhibited throughout the Sydney Domestic Qantas Club from 5 May.
