Meta will give parents access to their teen's Meta AI chat history in the coming weeks.
Parents using supervision on Facebook, Messenger or Instagram will be able to access their teen's insights through the Family Center, covering the past seven days of usage.
Parents will be able to view seven days of their teen's AI history through the Family Center, with usage broken down by application and theme, including school, entertainment, lifestyle, travel, writing, and health and wellbeing.
The rollout will begin across Australia, the UK, US, Canada and Brazil in the coming weeks, with further markets to follow.
Meta said its AI experiences are guided by 13+ movie rating criteria and parental feedback, with Meta AI designed to avoid age-inappropriate responses.
"This means Meta AI may not answer certain questions, and in some cases may direct teens to resources instead,” read Meta’s press release.
“We'll still show parents the topic their teen was asking about, even if Meta AI didn't respond to the question.”
The company is also introducing an AI Wellbeing Expert Council to provide ongoing input on age-appropriate AI experiences, drawing on existing advisory groups including Suicide and Self-Harm Advisors, Youth Advisors and Body Image Experts, alongside new members with expertise in responsible and ethical AI.
Meta worked with Sameer Hinduja, co-founder of the Cyberbullying Research Center, to develop conversation starters, open-ended questions designed to help parents discuss AI use with their teens.
These will be available through the Help Centre and the Family Centre's new insights section.
An alert system is also in development that will notify parents when teens attempt to engage Meta AI in conversations related to suicide or self-harm.
Current supervision features already include time limits, scheduled breaks and visibility of recent chat contacts.
AdNews has sought comment from Meta on whether the storage and categorisation of teen AI conversation data will have any implications for advertising targeting on its platforms.
Australia's access to parental chat history insights will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
