Meta has rolled out updates to its Brand Rights Protection tool, expanding the ability to report scam ads across Facebook and Instagram.

The company says the move is part of a broader effort to combat fraud and deceptive practices on its platforms.

“We take a comprehensive approach to countering fraud and scams,” Meta said in a statement.

“We have automated detection and content review systems that remove fake accounts and scam posts.”

Meta said it removed more than 157 million ads from Facebook and Instagram for violating policies against fraud, scams and deceptive practices or unacceptable business practices in 2024.

“We also collaborate with experts, law enforcement and industry partners to share insights that can help hold threat actors accountable,” the tech company said.

“And while Meta dedicates extensive resources to fight fraud and scams, businesses also have an important role to play in protecting their brands.”

Meta’s Brand Rights Protection tool allows businesses to monitor and report misuse of their brand, such as intellectual property infringement and business impersonation in both ads and organic content.

Overnight, the tech company announced updates to help protect people from harmful or misleading experiences.

Expanded scam ad reporting

After an initial test, all businesses enrolled in Brand Rights Protection now have the ability to report suspected scam ads at scale, even when it does not explicitly use their intellectual property.

This includes suspected scams and misleading ads that exploit a brand’s name without authorisation.

To access this option, users will need to click the ‘Other’ violation type on the ads tab of Brand Rights Protection.

With this expanded capability, businesses will be able to better protect their brands and customers from potential scams.

Simplified takedown request experience

Meta has redesigned the takedown request experience to streamline the process and reduce the steps required for people using Brand Rights Protection.

The ‘Drafts’ tab now has sub-tabs per violation type: Copyright, Counterfeit, Impersonation and Trademark.

Businesses are also now able to search or filter within the ‘Reports’ tab using email report IDs, keywords, trademark names and report owner names.

Mets said this simplified reporting experience is more “intuitive” and “user-friendly”, making it easier for brands and saving them time.

“We want to continue to meet the ever-evolving needs of businesses globally and we are committed to improving and delivering tools that protect and enhance brand integrity,” Meta said.
