Media Wrap: Social media targets live sport; SBS beat Nine to Viceland

Twitter, Snapchat target Aussie sports deals

Social media networks Twitter and Snapchat are sounding out Australian sports bodies, including the Football Federation of Australia and Cricket Australia, for further opportunities to stream live sport, Fairfax Media reports. This year has been a breakthrough for social media live sport with Twitter streaming live NFL games, Wimbledon, NBA content, while earlier this month Twitter secured a deal with the Australian Racing Club to show the Melbourne Cup. Seven, which will share its coverage of the Melbourne Cup with Twitter, has formed a partnership with Facebook to provide additional behind the scenes content, highlighting the importance TV networks place on social media engagement.

SBS beat Nine to secure Viceland deal

SBS outbid Nine Entertainment to secure content for its soon to launch SBS Viceland channel, The Australian reports. Last week, SBS revealed a line up of programming for the youth skewed channel ahead of its 15 November launch. Opponents of the deal, including ex-ABC chairmen Maurice Newman and Donald McDonalld criticised SBS for losing sight of its publicly-funded ethos and veering away from its charter to provide multilingual and multicultural programming. The SBS charter actually states the broadcaster must operate on a hybrid funding model of 80% public and 20% commercial, while the SBS Viceland programming slate and promo video appears to show multicultural content and covers a diverse range of youth issues rarely seen on Australian television. The Australian reports that SBS also outbid SVOD Stan to secure a Swedish-French murder mystery.
