Sales house MCN has come out on top in the first ever AdNews Media Company Rankings. It’s the first time that we – or, we believe, any media outlet – have undertaken this kind of ranking for media companies, in recognition that media companies are entering awards more than ever. Ranking companies against their peers in this way allows the industry to assess how they are performing and offers a view of the media landscape that hasn’t been available previously.

Media Company Rankings

While MCN came top, interestingly, one of Australia’s dominant media organisations, News Corp, doesn’t appear in the top 10 list for what we’re calling Representation. It does well, however, for work in the Walkley Awards rankings and the Newspaper of the Year awards.

Representation is based on how the company as a whole has been recognised in five industry award programs: AdNews Media Benchmark Study (20 top-ranked media companies as voted by media buyers), B&T Awards (Sales Team of the Year), Media Federation Awards (Media Owner of the Year), Media i (Sales Awards) and Mumbrella Awards (Sales Team of the Year).

Companies are also ranked for work entered into eight awards schemes: AIMIA Awards, ASTRA Awards, Australian Magazine Awards, Commercial Radio Awards, Logie Awards, Media Federation Awards (Partnership Award), Newspaper of the Year Awards, Publishers Australia Excellence Awards and Walkley Awards.

Notable snapshots are that the ABC ranks higher than both Seven and Ten in the Logies category rankings, Southern Cross Austereo is way out in front in the Commercial Radio Awards category, and Bauer is out in front in the Australian Magazine Awards rankings.

We’ve applied the same kind of methodology to the Media Company Rankings as our Media Agency Rankings, which has been running for three years, weighting the points allocation towards a number of awards schemes.

“The AdNews Agency Rankings have become a key component in benchmarking how agencies are performing, but media companies have been the missing link until now,” said James Yaffa, group sales director at AdNews publisher Yaffa Publishing. “The Media Company Rankings is designed to be an indicator of how media companies are performing in the increasingly competitive media sector.

“We feel looking at all media company awards reflects the new era of media company performance and shows that companies who continue to excel in sales representation and product will be rewarded by a trusted and credible ranking system.”
