MasterChef has delivered Ten a win for the night as the TV viewing public indicated its preference for food porn over renovation reality.

The launch episode of MasterChef brought in a metro audience of 1.23 million according to the preliminary overnight estimates from OzTAM, up on last year's premiere figure of 874,000.

In comparison, Nine's Renovation Rumble took home an audience of 873,000 while Seven's House Rules took in 791,000 viewers.

However, Nine had better luck with the series launch of popular drama Love Child, bringing in 920,000 across the metro areas.

The MasterChef success seemingly carried over to Ten's presentation of NCIS, bringing in 707,000 viewers. This is up on the 593,000 it managed to bring in last week.

The MasterChef success delivered Ten a rare overall win for the night on both a network and main channel basis.

Ten grabbed a 27.4% share with Nine going into second with a 26.5% share, with Seven taking the bronze with a 22.1 point share.

The main channel order didn't change, with Ten bringing in 21 points against Nine's 20.3 points and Seven's 18.2.

Meanwhile the ABC delivered a 17.7% share and SBS brought in a 5.2% share.
