Mamamia's podcast host and senior producer, Claire Murphy, has been made redundant, amid a broader round of cuts at the women's publisher.

Murphy estimated around 10 staff had been made redundant.

"I don't have an exact number," said Murphy told AdNews

"I know out of the people that I worked with, there's four of us, and then I've been told there are others, maybe three or four more."

Murphy said she had not seen the redundancy coming, despite having experienced previous rounds at Nine, where she said a title change could be a warning sign.

"Someone told me to be careful. A title change is a sure fire way. If it's a creative one that doesn't exist anywhere else in the company, that it can very easily be made redundant."

Commenting on her experience being made redundant at Mamamia, Murphy was quick to qualify.

“I can only really speak about my experience, not what's happening on a broader level. Those are decisions being made above my pay grade."

Yet, she told AdNews some of her team had also been concerned ahead of the announcement.

"One of my other colleagues had already been made redundant, and so we were concerned that other redundancies were going to happen," said Murphy.

"The vibe and the mood of the industry right now is very concerning, because ad revenue is falling. With all the stuff happening in Iran, and petrol prices, and businesses having to pay more to do business - there's lots of those factors going on."

"I just felt like my role was needed at that time, but I guess not."

Murphy said her redundancy was not related to Mamamia's ongoing AI investment, instead believing her responsibilities had been folded into other roles as part of a broader downsizing.

"The reasons I was given for my redundancy did not reflect that it was a reaction to AI being able to do what I do. Because it can't."

Mamamia declined to comment.
