British mid-market tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail has opened an Australian office to serve its MailOnline website, with plans to create a sales team.

The popular website, currently ranked the second most popular English language website in the world after The New York Times, has opened an office in Sydney within DMG Radio's Pyrmont office.

The office is being run by Australian manager Lisa Robertson, who previously worked in the Mail's London office in the press and digital teams.

Robertson said she was also looking to start creating content for the Australian market as well and offering more relevant stories to Australian internet providers.

Robertson said the site commands 1.3million unique browsers and 11.9million page impressions in Australia, on the back of a heavy diet of gossip, entertainment, and sport combined with current affairs news.

The paper already has an office in New York, which is staffed by a six-strong sales team. Robertson is planning to build a team of the same size in Sydney before the end of the year, with plans to grow the team every year.

She said: “It seems Australians and New Zealanders love the global celebrity content with over 590 thousand unique users visiting the TV & Showbiz channel every month and they are committed to growing this as well as their other global content.

“This is an exciting time for Australian and New Zealand media agencies with a new platform in the market that offers celebrity and lifestyle content unlike other sites.”
