John Singelton, a major shareholder in radio group Macquarie Media, says pressure groups are watching.

The adman was speaking for the first time since advertisers dropped number one rating Sydney radio broadcaster Alan Jones after he attacked NZ prime minister Jacinda Ardern on air.

Singelton told The Australian everyone has to be more careful of what they say.

He says Alan Jones has a "strident temper" which can exaggerate the points he makes.

"But there is a change now where we all have to be more careful of what we say. We’ve got to be more careful because there is now pressure groups and they work whether we like it or not,” he told the newspaper.

“You can’t criticise women, full stop. That’s the way it is. Jeez, he (Alan Jones) pays a massive price. But I guess that’s the price he pays for being so harsh in judging others.”

The backlash against Jones, who is on his last warning at the radio station, began after he suggested Prime Minister Scott Morrison should “shove a sock” down the throat of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for her comments on climate change.

Singelton also confirmed he was selling his 32% in Macquarie Media to Nine in an offer that values the radio network at $275.4 million. Singleton will get around $80 million.
