Private Media, the publisher of Crikey and SmartCompany, has appointed media executive Russ Horell CEO.

He replaces Will Hayward who is stepping down after five years leading the independent media group.

Horell joins after a 20-year career at media monitoring company Isentia, where he most recently served as chief revenue officer. He managed a work force of more than 300 people across the Asia-Pacific region.

"We believe Russ is uniquely positioned to continue the incredible trajectory set over the past few years and, crucially, to accelerate our rate of growth," said Eric Beecher, chairman of Private Media.

"Having managed large-scale operations across Asia for two decades, he brings a level of operational expertise and commercial acumen that is perfectly suited to our next stage of development."

Will Hayward endorsed Horell’s appointment, confident in the executive’s ability to lead.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend some time with Russ, both before and since these conversations started. Not only will he be an amazing leader, but he’s an awesome, smart, considered individual. Can’t wait to see where he takes the company next,” said Hayward.

The two will work together during the transition over the coming weeks.

"I have long admired Private Media’s commitment to independent, high-quality journalism and its ability to build loyal, engaged communities,” said Horell.

“My focus will be on building upon that solid foundation - finding new ways to scale our impact, enhance our commercial offerings and ensure Private Media remains at the forefront of the Australian media landscape.”

Horell will formally take over as CEO in mid-May.
