Ipsos iris: Sports dominates online news consumption

Online news consumption continues to rise driven by key sporting moments, with more than six in 10 Australians, or 14.06 million people aged 14+, visiting a sports website or app in September, according to Ipsos iris data released today.

Figures from Ipsos iris, Australia’s digital audience measurement currency endorsed by IAB Australia show that 22.127 million Australians aged 14+ used the internet in September and spent on average 4.87 hours per day online,  up 4.9% year on year. 

Australians spent 54 minutes in September consuming sports content online. 

Sports events such as the AFL Brownlow Medal and red carpet, the Brisbane vs. Geelong Grand Final and off-season trades and the NRL Grand Final garnered strong engagement online. 

Men spent more than five times the amount of time women do reading about sports online.

The 40+ demographic consumes online sports content 2.4 times more than those under 40. 

News website or app usage increased by +2.8% year on year, with a 96.4% reach or 21.3 million of online Australians aged 14+.

The top news brands for the month were ABC News (12,812), followed by news.com.au (12,071) and nine.com.au (9,336).

Top Australian news stories were the manhunt for cop killer Dezi Freeman, fatal shark attack at Sydney’s Long Reef Beach,  the sentencing of Erin Patterson for the "mushroom murder", reality shows and celebrity breakups. 

Global news stories which showed significant engagement were the assassination of US political activist Charlie Kirk, Donald Trump's State Visit to the UK and the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and the Ukraine. 

Popular categories included career (+7.6%), games (+5.1%), health (+4.4%) and Homes and Property ( +4.3%).

22.127 million Australians aged 14+ used the internet in September and spent on average 4.87 hours online,  up 4.9% year on year. 

Social media was the most consumed website and app category (22.07 million), followed by search engines (both 22.06 million), Technology (22.03 million), Retail and Commerce (21.9 million) and Entertainment (21.8 million).
