Industry Profile: Francesca (Franky) Ryan at Boomtown

Francesca (Franky) Ryan.

Our Industry Profile takes a look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

Francesca (Franky) Ryan: Marketing Lead at Boomtown.

Time in current role/time at the company:

Two months. But this is my second time around at Boomtown, when I worked at SCA.

How would you describe what the company does?

Boomtown is all about the power of regional audiences. Would you plan a media campaign and miss 9.9 million Aussies? Boomtown is a collective of media owners who help brands access the consumers in regional Australia.

What do you do day-to-day?

Anything and everything. We have a small team so the day to day is varied.

We could be planning an event, liaising with CMOs, industry partnership or hosting a Boomtown Masterclass.

Define your job in one word:

Regional rocks (sorry, two words)

I got into marketing/advertising/media/tech because:

I did a Business degree and got a graduate position with Louis Vuitton. After a few years I thought I should honour my degree and switched it up and got a job in media. Media seemed like such a fun and dynamic industry. Adshel was my first stop and I am still friends with my colleagues from all those years ago.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?

It’s a happy challenge, we work with a high volume of stakeholders at Boomtown. We are always trying our best to keep lots of plates spinning at the same time.

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?

Where do people work post 50? The pool seems to be small from where I sit. It feels like such a loss, having all that knowledge and expertise leak out of the industry.

Notable campaigns you have worked on:

This is my second spin with Boomtown. I was with SCA when Boomtown launched in 2019. It’s absolutely one of my proudest professional moments. And I am very lucky to come back.

Who has been a great mentor to you and why?

I will be cheeky and name three people who have been pivotal in my career.

Jane King gave me my start in marketing. I have had the joy of working for Jane three times and I very much hope there is a fourth!

Nikki Clarkson and Brian Gallagher have both been impactful in my career.

In a B2B marketing role it’s equally important to have marketing skills and commercial acumen. I have had the privilege of learning from the best on both fronts. People often don’t realise the impact they have on you as a person and a professional as you travel the day to day. But these three have been generous and allowed me to learn and grow and I am very grateful.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?

Call me, if I can be of any assistance I would be honoured to help you out. B2B marketing doesn’t have the same glamour attached to it as consumer marketing does. But I enjoy the variation in the day to day.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:

An interior designer.

My mantra is:

Do good work. Be a good person.

My favourite advert is:

This Honda beauty lives rent free in my head forever.

Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?

What don’t I subscribe to? Not much.

I live for Gold FM in the car, and I also love a good Netflix binge. It’s the Dallas Cheerleaders that I am looking forward to next.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

I can’t ride a bike. Wild but true. I will have to learn alongside my 4 year old.

In five years' time I'll be:

Doing good work with good people.
