Industry Profile: Digitas Australia head of media James Hudson

Our Industry Profile takes a look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, ad tech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we speak to Digitas Australia head of media James Hudson.

Time in current role/time at the company:
Four months.

How would you describe what the company does?
We connect data, technology and story with media to help our clients succeed in a world where consumers tell you exactly what they want, even if they don’t verbalise it.

What do you do day-to-day?
Manage the media function across our own agency clients and work with group sister agencies to help them deliver digital innovation.

Define your job in one word:

I got into digital marketing because:
I like the fact that there is something new every day. Guess I just like being geeky and playing with new technology.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?
The pace at which the industry is evolving. You can’t do this on your own, building the best team where we all learn together and enjoy doing it is my most important challenge.

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?
If we have to use specific technologies to access certain environments, external verification must have a place in order to give everyone more security.

Previous industry related companies you have worked at:
i-level, House of Kaizen, AKQA and Zenith.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?
If you don’t have a passion for an environment that is constantly changing, you will absolutely hate this industry.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:
A different challenge, but the constant would be a digital aspect to it.

My mantra is:
Embrace new technology and startups, there are literally so many cool things being developed all the time. Just check this out, a robotic farm for your back garden.

My favourite advert is:
Who doesn’t like an advert that has sausage dogs dressed up as hot dogs running across a field to a selection of condiments.

Music and TV streaming habits:
I rarely watch terrestrial tv, so most of our viewing is Netflix/Amazon, Spotify also plays heavily.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I went to Agricultural college for my degree. Nothing like ‘Agri-food marketing and business’ to set me up for a digital career.
