Our Industry Profile takes a weekly look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, ad tech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we head to Sydney to meet with Acxiom MD Australia and New Zealand, Dean Capobianco.

Duration in current role/time at the company:

I joined Acxiom in February 2015.

How would you describe what the company does?

Acxiom is an experienced leader in marketing data, technology and consulting, and consumer privacy able to merge online and offline marketing data together with unprecedented accuracy.

What does your role involve?

I lead the Acxiom business in Australia and New Zealand in driving our vision to equip our clients with the data and tools they need to build intelligent, bold and cutting edge marketing.

Within the last six months/year, what stands out as the company’s major milestones?

This year has been one of transformation and growth with a number of milestones including Acxiom’s acquisition of LiveRamp, partnerships with Facebook, Roy Morgan Research and major agencies like Dentsu Aegis Nework and OmnicomMediaGroup. These milestones lead to a great momentum change with a solid demand for data-driven solutions for marketers where Acxiom is uniquely positioned to support both local and global customers.

Best thing about the industry you work in:

I get a lot of satisfaction from the ongoing change.

Previous industry related (adland/ad tech) companies you have worked at:

My background is in media across a variety of leadership positions in both the Australian and international markets, including roles with Yahoo!, Ninemsn, News Corp, CareerOne and Chinese search giant Baidu. I also served as a Non-Executive Director at Adcorp Australia.

Career-wise, where do you see yourself in three years’ time?

Continuing to lead the evolution of digital business.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

I’m a very good cook. I love to cook for family and friends and prioritise leaving work on time so I can cook dinner for the family.

Top networking tip:

Walk up to someone and start a conversation. Confidence is crucial to success in business and you never know who you’ll meet at the next event you attend.

My favourite restaurant for a business lunch is:

Machiavelli, you can’t go wrong with the signature steak tartare followed by the fresh mango with Galliano and ice cream.

My favourite advert is:

The Optus ads with Ricky Gervais because there is no brand statement more powerful than the ability to make fun of yourself.

My must-have gadget is:

I still can’t go past my iPhone 6S for function and style.

My favourite media is:

I still love TV – nothing beats the stories that can be told visually.

My favourite TV show is:

House of Cards.

The last book I read:

Kerry Stokes: Self-made Man by Margaret Simons

My mantra / philosophy is:

Always try your best.

I got into digital business etc because:

Business models are always evolving.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:

On the wing for the West Coast Eagles

In five years' time I'll be:

50.

Challenging.
