Melbourne-based agency Good One Creative is establishing an annual May8 Day on May 8 as a simple, inclusive moment to celebrate mateship.
It is not a public holiday or a replacement for Australia Day.
Instead, it has been framed as a low-barrier, culturally flexible occasion championing patriotism and social harmony.
It was started by Good One co-founder Charlie Howcroft.
The campaign has been built through a rolling social content series on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, with Charlie travelling between communities on his moped and asking Australians: what does mateship mean to you?
The inaugural May8 Day event will be held on Friday May 8 at the City of Melbourne Bowls Club in Flagstaff Gardens from 6pm–10pm.
The free event will include a kanga banga and damper sausage sizzle planned - guests are encouraged to bring a topping or side that represents their culture and mateship group.
A group letter writing session, open discussions on the role of mateship in modern Australia, live music and lawn bowls and also planned.
