Bicycling Australia, the nation’s leading cycling media brand and home of The Classics, is excited to be hosting the inaugural Mudgee Classic on Sunday, 2 May 2021. After cancelling the 2020 event due to COVID-19, the cycling event has attracted strong interest from riders and is sold out in two of the three event categories.

Set in New South Wales’ beautiful Mudgee wine region, the latest Gran Fondo to join The Classics series will see over 2,000 cyclists from across the country participate in one of three road cycling events: the 170km Maxi Classic, 120km Challenge Classic and 35km Social Classic.

The courses have been designed to showcase the best of the region, passing through historic towns such as Bylong, Rylstone, Lue and more.

Local residents are advised sections of Church St will be closed between 4am-9am, and Lue Rd will be closed between 6.30am-4pm on Sunday, 2 May. Residents are urged to stay off the roads when possible and be mindful of cyclists. For more information on road closures, please go to Mudgee community.

A major coup for the region, 90% of participants are travelling from outside greater Mudgee, with many cycling groups making a multi-day to week-long holiday of the trip. The influx of riders to the region is estimated to contribute over $1,000,000 to the local community.

James Yaffa, founder of The Classics, says Mudgee's rich history and sensational tourism attributes make it the ideal venue for the new Classic offering.

"We are looking forward to delivering a very special weekend for our riders," he said. "We thank the local community and Destination NSW for their support, this event is destined to be a major success!”

Locals are encouraged to get involved with the event, through making signs, decorating front gates, or by claiming a free Mudgee Classic cowbell to cheer the riders through the finish arch at the Event Village at Glen Willow Regional Sports Complex on Sunday, 2 May between 10am–4pm. The Event Village will also host to a range of gourmet food stalls, bars, live music, and cycling exhibitor stalls.

The Mudgee Classic is supported by Destination NSW, Mid-Western Regional Council, NSW Police, Traffic Management personnel and emergency services. Organisers are working closely with the NSW Government to ensure the event is COVID-safe.

The support from many local businesses, including Craigmoor Wines, Giant Mudgee, Mudgee Brewing Co and Pieter Van Gent Winery, is very much appreciated.

Event Organisers would also like to acknowledge the support from local community groups including Mudgee Rotary, Mudgee Bushwalking Club, Rylstone Public School, Mudgee High School, Mudgee Junior Rugby League Club, Lue Rd Public School, Kandos Bay Scouts, Mudgee Mens' Shed, CWA and Bylong Hall Committee.
