The federal government has publicly announced an advanced notice that its master media agency account contract, worth $240 million, is coming up for review, AdNews can reveal.

The account, one of the largest and most prestigious in Australia, is currently held by Mediabrands' Universal McCann (UM).

UM won the account in 2018 and was awarded a three-year extension last year which is now due to end June 2024.

AdNews understands UM will be re-pitching for the account.

Official expressions of interest are expected to close around December this year, with a winner announced early next year.

UM previously held the contract from 2002 to 2014 and took back the account in 2018.

The master media agency account is responsible for all placement of Commonwealth government advertising, involving managing 20-30 campaigns at one time such as COVID-19 health messaging, defence force recruitment and most recently the cheaper childcare campaign.

Carat and Wavemaker share the South Australia government media account.

OMD holds the $70 million NSW government media contract.

OMD also has the $100 million Victorian government media account.

EssenceMediacom has the $60 million Queensland government media account.

Initiative and Carat share the $60 million Western Australia government media account.

Atomic 212° has the $10 million Northern Territory government media account.
