Fairfax Media has appointed Greg Hywood as its chief executive, following the resignation of Brian McCarthy late last year.
Fairfax chairman Roger Corbett said "When the Board was deciding on the best person to lead the company it believed that the baseline skills included people skills, credibility in the industry and commercial nous. But we also had two more very important requirements.
"First of all, the new CEO had to have journalistic skills, a real feel for content and credibility in the space. At the end of the day we all know that quality content is at the heart of our company. The content is now delivered in many ways – in print, on tablet, through radio, TV and more by the day – but at the heart of it all the content has to be compelling, readable, and of reliable high quality.
In an announcement to the ASX, Corbett also said a number of key appointments were forthcoming, to "ensure our combined strengths of quality, independent content and digital technology provide us with a range of growth opportunities."
