Facebook and Google will today know the recommendations from an investigation by consumer watchdog the ACCC into the concentration of market power by the digital platforms.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is due to release the 600-page report and give the federal government's initial response to the recommendations on the substantial power weilded by the platforms in markets for social media, display advertising and online news referral..

ACCC chair Rod Sims has signaled a strong response from his investigation including "safeguards" from market dominance on media and advertising.

The ACCC is concerned about the impact the platforms have on Australian businesses and the ability of media businesses to monetise their content.

A preliminary report by the ACCC outlined concerns regarding the extent to which consumers’ data is collected and used to enable targeted advertising.
