Streaming polatform Disney+ has passed 100 million global paid subscribers across the world in the 16 months since its launch.

Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company, revealed the number during the company’s virtual Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

“The enormous success of Disney+ -- which has now surpassed 100 million subscribers -- has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content,” he says.

“In fact, we set a target of 100+ new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Our direct-to-consumer business is the company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth.”

Disney+ launched in the US in November 2019, and has rolled out rapidly across Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Latin America, and most recently, Singapore.

Roy Morgan research shows Australians added subscription TV services at an astonishing rate during the lockdown period which started in late March last year.

Now almost 15.74 million Australians have access to a subscription TV service, up 878,000 or 5.9%, in only three months.

All the major subscription TV services have been big winners out of the lockdown with big increases in viewers for Netflix, Foxtel, Stan, Disney+ and Amazon Prime in the three months to May 2020.

Netflix remains Australia’s most watched subscription television service with 13.28 million viewers, an increase of more than 1 million in only three months (+8.8%).
