Coronavirus still tops Google searches but interest is waning

Coronavirus has been the most searched topic in Australia for nine consecutive weeks, but interest in the topic is dropping, according to Google Trends.

In the last week of April, search interest fell to its lowest daily volumes since late February in Australia, down 35% week-on-week and down 75% from the peak during the week of March 22.

The most popular questions being asked by Australians suggests that concern has now shifted from health risks to mitigation measures, including lockdowns and social distancing.

The search interest for "when will the lockdown end?" spiked 4,940% in April to surpass interest for "when will coronavirus end?".

The top trending coronavirus related search for April is "coronavirus app tracker", up 4,450%, while "early release of super coronavirus" was 1,250% higher.

Top trending related searches in the past seven days include:

  • "Heat map coronavirus NSW" - +5,000%.
  • "Cedar meats coronavirus"- +3,050%.
  • "Coronavirus testing locations near me" - +1,250%.
  • "Free TAFE courses QLD 2020 coronavirus" - +1,050%.
