The federal government will today announce the formation of an Office of AI but prime minister Anthony Albanese is unlikely to move on changes to copyright law.
Machine learning players have been demanding changes to copyright so they can access large amounts of content to train AI.
Anthropic, with AI Claude, is said to be offering a pool of funds to pay for content as long as there is a simple system to make overall deals with owners.
However, Australia has consistently said it won’t change copyright law to create a text and data mining exemption for AI players.
Albanese, in a speech today, will announce the establishment of an Office of AI within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
According to a preview of his speech, Albanese will declare an end to issue by issue approach to AI, including data centres, workplace changes, copyright and the use of machine learning in defence.
"Getting this right will enhance our appeal to international investors by delivering greater clarity and speed for approvals and a streamlined process for verifying compliance," he said in the speech extract.
The Office of AI will co-ordinate the design of “our new Australian Standards and to bring together the work ministers are undertaking across government”.
