Free TV broadcasters are continuing to invest in Australian content, according to Free TV Australia.
Commercial broadcasters have invested $1.625b in Australian content this financial year, according to the ACMA's latest report, TV in Australia: Spending on Commercial TV Programs for 2023-24.
The report highlights the industry's commitment to Australian journalism, with $408m spent on supporting trusted news services, including regional news and current affairs despite economic pressures.
Free TV Australia CEO Bridget Fair said broadcasters are delivering for Australian audiences despite challenging economic conditions and increasing competition from global digital platforms.
“Our commitment to local content remains as strong as ever – from trusted news to live sport and entertainment,” she said.
“While global streamers sell stories, we tell the stories that matter to Australians – and all for free.
“Australians value Australian television and the vital role it plays in our democracy, our culture, and our everyday lives. To keep delivering, we look forward to continuing to work with Government on policy settings that support a sustainable and vibrant industry.”
Free TV Australia is the peak industry body representing commercial free-to-air television broadcasters, including Seven, Nine and Ten.
