News Limited has appointed Brett Clegg as deputy chief executive of The Australian's commercial team, replacing Nick Leeder who has been appointed managing director of Google in Australia and New Zealand.

Clegg will be responsible for the day to day commercial operations of The Australian newspaper and its magazines, including sales, marketing, operations, circulation, digital and events.

News Limited chief executive Richard Freudenstein said: "Brett takes on this role at a very exciting time in the history of The Australian. Our print operations are in great shape – we were one of only two newspapers to grow circulation at the last ABC audit."

Clegg joined The Australian in June 2010 as deputy editor (business) following a lengthy career with Farifax Media's The Australian Financial Review.
