Betting industry calls for Senate inquiry into gambling advertising reforms

Betting industry body Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) has called for a Senate inquiry into the federal government's gambling advertising reforms.

In a statement, RWA said it was "disappointed" that despite a consultation process, the government failed to adopt any industry recommendations to improve its gambling advertising legislation.

Kai Cantwell, CEO at RWA, said the industry's feedback centred around clarity with key definitions, including further explanation around the treatment of celebrities and influencers, and addressing a number of practical implementation issues.

"We welcome the referral of the legislation to a Senate inquiry, which will provide a real opportunity to publicly examine the draconian and overreaching elements of this Bill and ensure Parliament has the opportunity to correct provisions that extend well beyond the Government's stated policy intent," Cantwell said.

"RWA remains committed to engaging with Parliament throughout the inquiry to ensure the final legislation is effective, proportionate and delivers the intended outcomes for punters and industry."

The reforms, scheduled for January 1, include restrictions across television, radio and online.
