From Clemenger BBDO's Snickers and Aussie builders ad to 'The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made', by Air New Zealand, AdNews has the 2014 leaderboard of the most watched ads on YouTube in Australia in 2014.

The leaderboard is calculated using an algorithm that factors in paid views, organic views and view rate (how much of a video people chose to watch).

The most watched YouTube ad in Australia in 2014 was Nike’s Winner Stays On ad for the World Cup.

Head of large advertiser and agency marketing at Google Australia, Chris Dodson, said more than 100 million people around the world saw the spot, showing the power of combining a global moment with a great creative idea and a star-studded cast.

Despite the big name brand taking top spot, Dodson said local ads also had a strong showing, with Qantas’ Feels Like Home taking home second place and rounding off a year-long rivalry with Air New Zealand - whose videos featured frequently in AdNews’ quarterly leaderboard.

“Australians took to YouTube in a big way in 2014, subscribing to more than 40 million new channels: almost two channels for every Australian,” Dodson said.

“Brands followed these eyeballs and they discovered that Aussies were willing to watch ads for much longer than many expected.”

Dodson said that because online video is not restricted to 30 or 60 second spots, creatives have “pushed the boundaries” of how long an ad can be - and found that people love to watch engaging, longform content.

The average length of the top 10 YouTube ads that Aussies watched in 2014 was three and half minutes and globally, Dodson said YouTube watchtime is up 50% on 2013.
