Radio network ARN has refused to air an ad by animal activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) which highlights the treatment of racehorses.

The radio spot mimics the typical commentary of horse races, but describes the death of various horses instead.

Peta says ARN in Melbourne, which recently extended its partnership with Victoria Racing Club, deemed the ad too controversial for broadcast.

ARN declined to comment.

“Each spring, we’re bombarded with advertisements about having a day at the races, what to wear to the races, and what to drink at the races,” Peta says.

“However, most people don’t know the cruel reality of what they’re supporting because it’s not profitable to talk about wastage, breakdowns, and deaths.”

The ad comes following a recent ABC 7.30 report that revealed some 300 horses, representing almost $5 million in prize money, went through one abattoir in just three weeks.
