Amazon has fired shots in the TV streaming war with the launch of its Fire TV stick, directly taking on Google's Chromecast. However, it's not shipping to Australia, yet.

The traditional TV market is being disrupted by over the top streaming services and tools that allow users to stream content directly onto TV screens from online. Another player adds to the already cluttered and fragmented market.

The Amazon Fire stick features twice the memory of Chromecast and also gives users access to a raft of content, including Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu, WatchESPN, NBA Game Time, Prime Music, Pandora and Spotify.

Users will also get access to Amazon's back-catalogue of movies and TV shows, which stands at more than 200,000.

The stick which connects to the HDMI port on a TV is a follow-up product from Amazon's Fire TV streaming media box, which forms part of Amazon bundled products and services.

The Fire TV stick features 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, dual-band and dual-attenna Wi-Fi. It also has its own remote control a well as a smartphone app.

"Customers have told us they want to use a remote control, not just their phones, to watch TV. Now, everyonein the household can watch movies and TV shows without borrowing your phone," Amazon said in a statement.
