AdNews Emerging Leader of the Year: What qualities make a good leader?

By AdNews | 21 June 2021

It's that time of year again where AdNews celebrates the next wave of leaders who are making their mark on the advertising, media and marketing industry.

To inspire the future leaders of our industry, AdNews looks back at the advice previous recipients of the AdNews Emerging Leader of the Year accolade have shared on what qualities make a good leader.

PHD Sydney head of strategy Mitchell Long, who was crowned the Emerging Leader of the Year for 2020, says leadership is about treating people the way you would like to be treated.

"If leading is simply about treating others how you would like to be treated, having empathy for others, and being yourself, then I am surrounded by people that reinforce that example for me every day," Long says.

"My advice to anyone would be really think about introspection and who you are and what motivates you and what gets you going.

"Keep doing what you're doing and work with really good people."

Initiative senior director of strategy and global head of good Jason Maggs, who was crowned the Emerging Leader of the Year for 2019, says that "doing good" should be a core function for everyone's role.

"Hopefully one day we don't need a department dedicated to doing good, and that it's a democratised role where doing good is just part of every day," Maggs says.

“I've got a firm belief that if we all just did what we're really, really good at for those who need it the most, we'd be in a much better place in society."
