Ad Net Zero Australia is urging the advertising and media industry to step up and play its part in tackling climate change during Climate Action Week Sydney, with a series of events running March 9-13.

Organised by the Climate Action Foundation in partnership with the City of Sydney, Climate Action Week Sydney brings together hundreds of community-led events across the city each year.

This year’s theme, “Change Happens Locally”, is to emphasise that meaningful climate progress starts with the decisions we make every day – in briefs, production choices, media selection and the messages we amplify through ads.

Launched in October 2024, Ad Net Zero Australia is a joint initiative by the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA), Advertising Council Australia (ACA), Interactive Advertising Bureau Australia (IAB) and the Media Federation of Australia (MFA).

“Advertising shapes culture drives demand and influences billions of dollars in investment every year,” said Ad Net Zero Australia lead Arum Nixon.

“That means our industry has both a responsibility and a powerful opportunity to reduce its own emissions and accelerate change across the economy.

“Climate Action Week is not about abstract ambition – it’s about practical steps. Whether you work in strategy, creative, media, production or technology, there are actions you can take right now. We’re inviting the whole industry to get involved, get informed and be part of the solution.”

The events include: ‘Connecting to Nature: Harnessing the power of storytelling to influence culture and create lasting impact’ by Ad Net Zero and Publicis Groupe, ‘Change Happens Locally: Sustainability in action in the ad industry’ by dentsu Australia and ‘The path to planet-positive TV production’ by SBS.
