ABAC (Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code Scheme) has received via Ad Standards recurring complaints about alcohol brands advertising to minors.
Sapporo Premium Black Beer by Australian-owned Coopers Brewery used Instagram marketing featuring an Easter chocolate that is unwrapped to reveal a beer, with two wrapped chocolate eggs in the background.
The easter egg imagery and 'bright, playful colours' was claimed to highly resonate with minors.
The ad violates the Responsible Alcohol Marketing Code.
Stryda Brewing Co Pty Ltd advertised beer on Facebook and Instagram marketing.
The complaint was concerned that Stryda Brewing Co Pty Ltd was advertising free alcohol in exchange for comments on social media accounts open to young people and does not advise that the marketing is directed towards people more than 18 years.
The panel found that the company breached the part 4 (b) standard by marketing on social media posts that have not used available age restriction controls.
Coles Liquorland used TikTok marketing to show the potential of using Caramello Koala's as a cocktail garnish.
Caramello Koalas are a known chocolate for young Australians.
The panel believed that the Part 3 (b)(i) standard had been breached due to the strong appeal to minors.
All social media advertisements reported to ABAC were removed from social media.
Boozicles packaged individual servings of alcoholic ice blocks and a 12-pack mixed box packaging.
The complainant believes the marketing contains imagery designed to entice children to switch from regular ice blocks to alcoholic ice blocks. And that the company’s Instagram marketing resembled Zooper Doopers, a non-alcoholic ice block.
The packaging of Boozicles Alcoholic Ice Blocks was found to have strong or evident appeal to minors, a breach of part 3 (b)(i) of the code.
Boozicles will modify the packaging.
