It's a #Mulberrymiracle when Joe gives Mary a red Mulberry bag for Christmas, prompting unexpected visits from local well-wishers ...

In a slightly sacrilegious offering Mulberry has replaced the baby Jesus in the nativity scene with a Bayswater handbag in its “Mulberry Miracle” Christmas ad spot, sending the message that the accessory is indeed a thing of wonder.

As the two minute online film opens, a man is seen handing a large gift box to his partner, Mary, in front of a roaring fire. Mary cries, “Oh my God, Joe!” at the mere sight of the Mulberry label on the front.

Slowly lifting the lid on her present, the woman eyes light up at the sight of the red Mulberry Bayswater handbag. “It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life. It's absolutely amazing,” she declares, before moving in for a passionate kiss.

As if his partner's awestruck response to the red leather accessory wasn't enough, Joe's moment of glory is interrupted when the couple's home is within seconds descended upon by an array of characters – including a local farmer, shepherds and three dapper well-wishers – each hoping to get an eye-full of the gift.

The ad ends with the words, #MulberryMiracle.

The campaign went live on Monday and includes the two minute online film, social activation and a website. 13 hours later it had racked up almost 160,000 views.

Perhaps as likely to provoke complaints as it is laughs, the Mulberry ad seems set to become a memorable contribution to this year's Christmas ad line-up, but will it sell handbags? Leave your thoughts below ...
