Cybercrime costs the Australian economy about $29b annually.

The Department of Home Affairs has launched the Federal campaign, Beat Cybercrime in Your Downtime, encouraging Australians to take control of their cybersecurity.

Created by BMF, the campaign heroes everyday, human acts of cybercrime protection, focusing on how easy it can be to manage online security. The TVCs show people taking security measures at home, from the comfort of their own sofa or while in the middle of a beauty routine, and urges: “Act Now. Stay Secure”.

BMF’s head of account management Richard Woods says the campaign shows the breadth of precautions needed.

“We often assume cybercrime is just about protecting what’s in our bank accounts, but it’s about protecting something far more precious - our identity and personal information.”

Cybercrime is estimated to cost the Australian economy $29 billion per year, with more than 2.8 million Australians falling victim to some sort of scam in 2019.

A Department of Home Affairs spokesperson says Australians can tap into the Federal Government’s free, online security check learning: “We want Australians to rethink the importance of cybersecurity and rethink how valuable their personal information and identity can be to online criminals.”

The campaign launched on October 31 and will be running until the end of the year. It rolls out nationally and includes TV, social and digital executions.
