Ten's Wonderland.

Network Ten's highly promoted local drama Wonderland debuted to 948,000 viewers last night. But the ABC's Gruen Nation and Seven and Nine News attracted more eyeballs.

Wonderland, which aired at 8:30pm last night, was the fifth most-watched free-to-air program of the night, according to preliminary overnight ratings from Oztam. 948,000 metro viewers tuned in. The local drama was also the top-rating format in all three key demographics.

Wonderland could be the next ratings powerhouse for the embattled network, similar to US sci-fi drama Under the Dome, which has attracted an average audience of 1.12 million since it launched in June this year.

Ten national sales director, Louise Barrett told AdNews that the strong Wonderland debut was a sign that "momentum was building" at the network.

Ten's Masterchef, at 7:30pm, also lifted, pulling in 807,000 viewers.

Nine News won the ratings battle with 1.20 million metro viewers, followed by Seven News with an audience of 1.18 million. Both aired at 6pm.

The ABC's annual election-related episode of Gruen Planet, Gruen Nation, and Wonderland timeslot rival, attracted 1.05 million viewers. It featured former Ten sales boss and Innocean managing director Mike Morrison, and VCCP creative director Dean Hunt on one of its segments, The Pitch. VCCP won the pitch battle.

The election-related episode of similar ABC comedy show, The Hamster Decides, had an audience of 774,000. It aired at 9:20pm.

Other programs in the top 20 included Seven's Slideshow and Home and Away with 932,000 and 881,000 respectively. Nine's A Current Affair and Big Brother lured 976,000 and 791,000.

Overall, Seven won the night with 18.4%. Nine had 16.6%, Ten had 14.6% and the ABC had 14.4%. SBS had 3.7%.
