Radio revenue down in 2012 but audiences up

The commercial radio industry saw ad revenue slide 1.3% in 2012 to $674 million, dropping in all of the five metropolitan markets except Perth, according to Commercial Radio Australia (CRA).

Despite the decline, the latest metropolitan ratings figures from Nielsen show 9.5 million people listened to commercial radio each week in 2012 - up from 9.4 million people the previous year.

CRA chief executive Joan Warner said the revenue results for 2012 reflected the tough economic conditions being experienced across the country.

“Radio has had a softer year but once again has shown its resilience and competed well when compared to other traditional media.

“Results for the year show patchy figures for the five metropolitan markets with some performing better than others at different times, again dependent on local influencing factors.”

Sydney's advertising revenue dropped 1.7% to $208.7 million in 2012, while Melbourne was down 1.2% to $202.3 million, Adelaide was down 0.2% to $64.6 million, and Brisbane fell 2.5% to $106.8 million.

In contrast, Perth increased 0.3% to $91.6 million.

CRA's revenue figures were sourced by Deloitte.

However, Warner said the industry ended the year on a positive note with an increase in its average weekly audience.
