One of the country's biggest spending advertisers, the Queensland Government, has put its media account out to tender, as its contract period with incumbent MediaCom Brisbane comes to an close.

A staff member at the state government told AdNews the open tender was part of its regular review process, and that the contract with MediaCom was coming to the end of its term.

According to Nielsen, the media spend for the Queensland Government was between $65 million and $70 million in 2011, but the government has been slashing its spending at the behest of Premier Campbell Newman.

In the first six months of 2012, the Queensland Government spent between $25 million and $30 million on main media, down 26% on the previous corresponding period, according to Nielsen.

The industry has been holding out to see which media pitch would “ruin Christmas”, and many had suggested hopefully that this might be the first year in some time where a major media review did not occur over the holiday period, with the National Australia Bank and News Corp pitches closing last month.

However, with a submission deadline of 21 January, this will not be the case.
