Huffington Post coy on Aus as local site takes aim

Rumours continue to swirl that The Huffington Post will imminently launch in Australia. Fairfax's SMH recently reported that former online editor at The Age Daniel Sankey could be in the frame for the launch.

“I couldn't confirm or deny anything at the moment” Sankey told his former employer's organ, citing a confidentiality agreement around his new role.

In the meantime a new Australian opinion site named The Big Smoke launched this week looking to capitalise on the uncertainty. As nature abhors a vacuum, so the site has proclaimed itself the 'Australia's answer to The Huffington Post'.

The site will cover politics and popular culture and has some 60 contributors on its books, including Derryn Hinch, Gretel Killen and mayor Clover Moore.

While the mantle may be short-lived, the HuffPo remained coy. Last month Communication Director Rhoades Alderson told AdNews that there were "no announcements at this time. We'll let you know when we have news to share."
