Fox International Channels will expand its Australian operation next year with the relaunch of FX channel on Foxtel in early 2012.
FX originally launched in 1995 as a retro channel before moving into women's programming, eventually rebranding as W. The three core shows relaunching the male-skewed general entertainment channel will be zombie drama The Walking Dead, The Transporter and Hell On Wheels.
Fox International Channels director of programming and presentation Dean Dezius told AdNews FX's other signature shows, including Sons of Anarchy and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, would not be available on the Australian offering due to pre-existing licensing arrangements.
"By coming late to the game a lot of shows which have a home on FX in
other markets are already subject to output deals. So we will be going
to open market to look for quality programming," he said.
Dezius said the decision to bring the channel back to Australia came from a
realisation that there was a space in the market for a male-targeted
general entertainment channel in the 25-54 demographic.
Dezius said while it was too early to comment on specific arrangements, negotiations around advertising and sponsorships were well underway through Ignite Media Brands. "The [25-54 male] demographic is very attractive to advertisers. Being a premium offering we're obviously looking to attract premium brands. We're very happy with the work we've been doing with Ignite."
Fox International Channels managing director Karin Simoncini said: “We’re incredibly excited to be launching FX next year. It’s a brand that’s known around the world for its edgy entertainment and we’re proud to be creating an Australian version that will feature the hottest shows around.”
