Facebook overhauls profiles

Facebook will roll out changes to users' profiles as it continues to unveil updates in the face of competition from Google.

Over the weekend, Facebook announced on its official blog the introduction of "Timeline", a feature that will allow users to share what they deem to be the most important posts without it vanishing off the page.  Visually, "Timeline" will update the aesthetic of a user's profile with a large image across the top.

Facebook has also introduced "social apps", allowing a user to automatically share with their networks things including what films they've watched recently through Netflix or Hulu, or what they're listening to on Spotify.

Apps can be added now, however "Timeline" won't be rolled-out to the general public for a few weeks.

Since Google launched its third attempt at social networking, Google+, Facebook has introduced many updates to its features. Google+, which opened to the general public last week, launched with video calling, group mobile messaging and a feature which will allow users to group contacts within "Circles". Since then, Facebook has introduced or announced plans for similar features.
