In the five metro cities, 1.2 million people are listening to digital radio each week, according to new figures from Commercial Radio Australia (CRA).

The peak radio body has also claimed that almost 800,000 digital radios to date have been sold.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers figures, household penetration of DAB+ digital radio will reach 16% by December 2013, and 18% by June 2014.

CRA chief executive Joan Warner said, “Digital radio sales and listening have increased despite one of the worst retail climates for decades. The commercial radio industry has invested in the promotion of digital radio and worked very hard with retailers.

“We've put our money where our mouth is and used our medium to tell our listeners about digital radio. Once again, results highlight just how well radio works.”

The future of digital radio has been a point of contention within the media industry. While the radio industry has been pushing the platform, a large portion of the market has argued it will be difficult to reach maximum penetration.
