Marketing agency Core has recruited Banjo Brisbane head planner Justin Gurney as head of planning, as UNICEF reappoints the agency for strategy.

Gurney will lead strategic planning for the agency and its clients including Campari, Toga and Engin. He returns to Sydney from Banjo's Brisbane office, which he joined in late 2009.

Gurney has previously worked for CHE Brisbane as group account director on Queensland Rail and Australia Post. He has also been on the client side, in marketing roles for Virgin Money and Telstra BigPond Music.

Core managing partner Duncan Wakes-Miller said: "We had conversations with a lot of people before asking Justin to join our team. He has the approach and experience that are a perfect fit for our clients and our business. The marriage of great brand strategy with a client's commercial objectives is a potent mix and something Justin clearly gets in spades."

Gurney said: "Core is a next generation marketing business that has quickly attracted a lot of clients who value strategic work, real world solutions and creative ideas. I'm chomping at the bit to work with such a collection of dynamic brands."

Gurney will join Core's leadership team alongside Wakes-Miller and client service director Anna Archibald.

Meanwhile, Core has been reappointed by UNICEF to develop strategy to target partners in the corporate sector, as the charity looks to expand its donation base.

UNICEF chief development director Louise Brockbank said: "The corporate donations area is a highly competitive space, but the brand savvy commercial approach and what Core brings into our team will help us find some rewarding and mutually beneficial partnerships."

Wakes-Miller said: "UNICEF is probably the most trusted and respected children's charity in the world and its programs achieve great outcomes. Its values and beliefs are in alignment with many progressive companies and brands, and we're working to create beneficial ways to bring them together."
