Bernard Tomic's early exit from last night's match-up against world number one Rafael Nadal may have been anti-climatic for the crowd but was a ratings winner for Seven as the top non-news and current affairs program.

Day two of the Australian Open tennis, in which fellow Aussie ratings drawcard Lleyton Hewitt suffered a gruelling five-set defeat to Italian Andreas Seppi, pulled in 1.06 million metro viewers, according to preliminary overnight figures from OzTAM, after a slower-than-expected start on Monday.

The tennis was the fourth most watched program, with Seven News on top (1.272 million), followed by Nine News (1.164 million) and Nine News 6:30 (1.075 million). Today Tonight took out fifth spot with 1.042 million.

In terms of live free-to-air audience share, Seven came out on top with 33.8%, followed by Nine (25.8%), ABC (19.2%), Ten (16.4%) and SBS (4.8%). However, consolidated viewing numbers had Nine edging in front with 27% share, with Seven just behind at 26%, followed by ABC (21%), Ten (19.3%) and SBS (6.8%).
