Despite losing its title as Sydney's top-rating FM station to WSFM last survey period, 2DayFM has regained its position as competitors fall prey to decreases. Other solid performers were Triple M and Mix 106.5. Triple J struggled.
The new commercial radio ratings come from Nielsen and survey the major stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The data is from 24 Feb to 30 March and 7 April to 11 May 2013.
Last month's ratings revealed Australian Radio Network's (ARN) WSFM as the overall FM winner in Sydney. It had risen to an 8.5% market share, trumping 2DayFM which had an 8.4% share. However, WSFM's market share has since fallen back to 7%, meaning 2DayFM - which increased its overall market share by 0.1% - is now at the top with a total share of 8.5%.
The station also lost 0.9% of the market in Brisbane, where it is known as 4KQ, and in Adelaide, where it is known as Cruise 1323 it lost 0.5% share.
Despite this, ARN regained lost ground with Mix106.5 enjoying the biggest increase in the Sydney FM market. It gained 1.3% of the market taking its overall share from 4.4% to 5.7%. It jumped in Brisbane and Melbourne taking an extra 0.9% of the market and 0.4% respectively. It shed 0.5% of the overall market in Perth however.
SCA's Triple M continued on the upwards trajectory with rises in all key markets except Sydney, where it stayed the same. The station increased the most in Brisbane with a rise of 1.1% of the total market. In Melbourne it gained 0.7% of the market, adding a 0.4% share in Adelaide. Its increases in Brisbane and Melbourne were the biggest rises in those respective markets.
The major Sydney winner however was Macquarie Radio Network's 2GB, which was the highest-rating Sydney station overall with a share of 14.7%. The AM station - which shock jock Alan Jones' calls home - added another 1.5% of the market to its base.
DMG's Smooth FM, which celebrates its first birthday today, continued to grow with increases in both its operating markets, Sydney and Melbourne, with adding 0.3% and 0.2% of the market respectively.
Conversely, the ABC's youth-focused FM station, Triple J, shed a heavy 1.8% of the totla market in Sydney and Adelaide. This was the biggest decline in both markets. It also lost out in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane with smaller yet still significant total share losses of 0.6%, 0.5% and 0.2% respectively.
Melbournians also fell foul with Nova 100 and Magic, which lost 0.7% and 0.6% of the market.
In Brisbane, other dips - in addition to 4KQ and Triple M - came from MRN's 4BH and ABC's 612. 4BH shed 1.2% of the overall audience, the biggest in the market, followed by 612 which lost 0.7%. B105, which is the equivalent of Sydney's 2DayFM, decreased marginally. Rises were generated by DMG's Nova 106.9 (0.6% share) and ABC's 4RN (0.3% share).
In Perth, Fairfax-owned talk back station 6PR decreased the most by 1.4% od the overall audience. SCA's Mix 94.5 lost by 0.5% of overall listeners. Largest rise was 96FM which tool 1.3% of the market.
Meanwhile, Adelaide stations Nova 91.9 (DMG) and ABC's 891 added 1.3% and 1.1% of the overall listener base to their rosters respectively.
