Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

Today we speak to The Story Lab content partnerships executive Rebecca Warrand.

Time in current role/time at the company:
Four months in content partnerships with The Story Lab, just over two years at dentsu in total.

How long have you been in the industry?
Two years and four months.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
When I graduated university, I knew I wanted to start out agency side as I’d heard it was a great way to immerse yourself in media experience. My first job was with dentsu’s Amplifi back in 2019 then I moved to Carat. I decided to switch it up and jump into content partnerships with The Story Lab at the beginning of 2021 and haven’t looked back!

Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
All of The Story Lab team are so energetic and creative which is very inspiring. I also have my fabulous mentor Claire Crennan to thank – she played a big part in encouraging me to get involved in content and partnerships in the first place and showed me the value of prioritising good work-life balance.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
No day is ever the same. The Story Lab services all of dentsu’s clients, so every day we will work on a new client campaign with new challenges to solve and creative solutions to find.

And the biggest challenge?
Working from home. I’m the sort of person who finds the buzz of the office incredibly motivating. I also love the work-life separation that going to the office provides. Plus who can complain when your commute involves walking past the Harbour bridge and Opera House every day!

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Hard to say, I’m still discovering new areas of the media industry that interest me every day. That being said, C-Suite has a nice ring to it.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
Honestly, different forms of media. Social media, books, film & television, podcasts, the list goes on. The inspiration is never ending.

My favourite advert is:
Qantas – “I still call Australia home”. As someone who grew up moving and travelling around Australia a lot, the pure emotional nostalgia this campaign holds for me is unmatched. Tears every time.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I’ve been saying I’m ‘getting into running’ for over a year now – one day I hope to progress to just ‘running’!

In five years' time I'll be:
Working in some exotic destination overseas, using my creative thinking and working on awesome campaigns. And probably still crying over the Qantas ad.
