Corey Middleton

Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

Today we speak to Murmur Group client director Corey Middleton.

Time in current role/time at the company:
Nigh on 2 years now.

How long have you been in the industry?
My first related role kicked off in 2017.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
Absolutely not, I fell in love with the idea of shaping people’s perception and behaviours. I also tried a LOT of other jobs.

Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
Our director Dave Levett and I have excellent rapport and tend to bounce ideas around regularly. He pushed me into the current role.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
We get familiar with a lot of business models and industries. It makes our perspective super valuable.

And the biggest challenge?
Respect for marketing professionals in business has fallen off a cliff since every bloke with a spreadsheet and MacBook decided they can be “digital strategists”. There are a lot of untrained experts out there.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Mark Ritson, or the MD of Funlab Pty Ltd.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
Either really small challenger brands (Step One, Dollar Shave) or big figureheads (Edward Bernays, Disney).

My favourite advert is:
The Captain Risky series by Budget Direct “Let’s kick it and rip it!” it’s a perfect reimagining of Andy Samberg’s Hot Rod character and the message “we don’t insure Captain Risky to keep costs down” is great.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
There isn’t much I keep under wraps, but I do have a couple thousand dollars’ worth of unopened whisky collected for no reason other than I think the bottles are sexy!

In five years' time I'll be:
Hopefully CMO somewhere local, or maybe by then I’ll have launched my own whisky brand and be ready to flog it off to Asahi to retire at 30!
