Reddit, the social news aggregation site, is making its Community Funds program official with $1 million in funding to help Reddit community ideas and passions come to life.

From next month, Reddit will invite communities, including Australian-based communities, to submit ideas for projects, events, contests, giving, or other initiatives that will bring people together for inspiration and delight.

This is the first time such a scheme has been announced since Reddit opened its Australian doors in July last year.

Nominations will be accepted for projects needing anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000 in funding, and select grantees based on their creativity, feasibility, and community impact.

“Sometimes all it takes is a little boost to make a great idea come to life, and we want to empower our communities with this support,” said Laura Nestler, vice president of community at Reddit.

Over the past six months, Reddit had been trialling Community Funds and funded a total of 13 projects from the communities that nominated. Projects already realised included a comics tournament, a community-designed musical artist billboard in Times Square, and a digital conference for history buffs.
