Retail spending in Australia may not have been as robust as usual post Christmas and January.

Analysis by martech Pureprofile of the spending patterns of 400,000 Australians shows a fall in average spends in the retail category during the boxing day to back to school period (December 26 to January 31).

The books category was affected the most with an 8% fall compared to the previous year, followed by clothing, shoes & fashion (-4%).

Gaming (indoors) and Fitness, sporting & outdoor equipment (outdoors) both fell (-3%).

Furniture, household goods & appliances were least affected with only a 2% decline.

Gen X (-13%) was found to be holding back on discretionary spending the most.

Pureprofile's analysis is based on its latest Audience Intelligence: Top 1,000 brands, a data platform that showcases the verified, transactional data of Australia’s top 1,000 consumer brands.

CEO of Pureprofile, Martin Filz, said: “It is evident that rising cost of living is affecting Australian consumers in a tangible way.

Comprising transactional data that amounts to over $6 billion in spend via more than 115 million transactions a year and sourced from financial institutions, businesses will be able to understand when, where and how often people are spending within a range of industries.
