Triton Digital’s Podcast Ranker for January 2024 has been released, with Shameless taking the spot in both the Top 100 Ranker and Top 100 All-Australian Ranker.

The pop culture podcast racked up 516,106 monthly listeners and just over 1 million monthly downloads in January, jumping from fourth to begin the year in first place.

Casefile True Crime fell to second spot, tallying 479,799 monthly listeners, while the ABC's Conversations rose three spots to third with 455,637 monthly listeners. Rounding out the top five were Mamamia Out Loud, down two spots with 387,308 monthly listeners, and Hamish & Andy in fifth, down two spots with 364,578 monthly listeners.

The Kyle & Jackie O Show saw a big jump to start the year, rising 12 places to finish at sixth with 352,189 monthly listeners. Crime Junkie came in at tenth, rising three spots thanks to 317,067 monthly listeners.

ARN/iHeartMedia, LiSTNR (SCA) and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) remained at first, second and third in the Top Publishers rankings. ARN/iHeartMedia led the way in monthly listeners with 4,510,060 to go along with close to 16 million monthly downloads, while the ABC totalled 26,972,953monthly downloads, the highest for January.

Australians downloaded 90.3 million podcasts in January, up 33% from January 2023’s 67.8 million, and up 11% from 81.2 million downloads in December 2023.

ARN’s head of digital audio, Corey Layton, says with both listening and advertising continuing to rise, it’s clear why podcasts are Australia’s fastest growing mass medium.

"As our exceptional lineup return, we’re gearing up with a few surprises in store for listeners and brands alike," he says.

SCA executive head LiSTNR podcasts, Grant Tothill, says it was great to have both LiSTNR's owned and operated titles, along with its international partner titles, move up the ranker in January and to increase our monthly listeners from December.

"This is a testament to all the hard work from the entire LiSTNR team," he says.

“Looking ahead we are expecting this strong audience growth to continue. Our new podcast Secrets We Keep: Nest of Traitors is already delivering impressive listening numbers, we are today launching new crime drama Gripped: Second Son and on 29 February, we will welcome the return of Hamish & Andy.

"We also expect to see exciting growth thanks to Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki and the return of regular publishing of our radio podcasts. This all adds up to a very strong foundation set by the LiSTNR team, which we’ll continue to build on throughout 2024.

“As LiSTNR continues to improve its ad-tech capability and first party data, now advertisers have more and more reasons to use podcast advertising to reach new audiences."
