SYDNEY: News Limited's John Hartigan has appointed Virgin Mobile marketing director, Anthony Hearne, to the newly created role of marketing director for paid content.

Hearne will oversee the marketing and sale of News Limited's paid content, and will work with mastheads as they develop new digital subscription products.

He will take up the new role next month and will report to News Digital Media's chief executive of content and commercial, Ed Smith. He will also work closely with group marketing director, Joe Talcott, and the company's divisional marketing directors.

News Limited chairman and chief executive, John Hartigan, said the appointment was part of an increased focus on the digital side of the business.

He said: "We’re pulling in the best people for this and when it comes to subscription marketing, Ant is undoubtedly one of the best. The way people consume media is changing, and in turn we are transforming our newsrooms - and our business - to produce new content, delivered to moire people in more ways.

"This means our publications are starting to grow rapidly and Ant's experience in packaging and selling customer offers will be vital as we harness this to our best advantage."

Hearne has previously held a number of marketing positions at SingTel Optus, including marketing director for Optus Consumer, and managing director of pre-paid services.

At Virgin Mobile, Hearne has been replaced by Dan Woodall, head of product marketing, on an interim basis.
