News Bulletin: Push for audio description builds momentum

Vision Australia lobby for audio description

Vision Australia representatives have met MPs in Canberra this week to lobby for the inclusion of audio description on Australian TV.

Audio description is another audio track that can be switched on and off to describe key visual elements of a program, including actions, scene changes, gestures and facial expressions.

Both Netflix and the ABC's iView have recently added audio-description content to its services, amid calls for commercial broadcasters to do the same.

This meeting came as the Senate recently supported a motion put forward by Greens Senator Rachel Siewert calling for audio description.

Million Dollar Pitch judges give their tips

With the competition heating up for Ooh!Media's Million Dollar Pitch, the judging panel give their tips on how to beat the competition - or how to lose your place on the list.

What they're not interested in? "Cookie cutter" presentations.

The panel is made up of Ooh!Media CEO and judge Brendon Cook, CBA GM of brand sponsorship and marketing Stuart Tucker and Razor and Joy founder and owner Simon Rush, Coca Cola South Pacific group marketing manager, integrated marketing communications Leo Roberts, AANA CEO Sunita Gloster and Ogilvy Sydney ECD Derek Green.

Cook said passion is important but he also wants to see a "power close".

“Pitching is a really important aspect of business. It’s clearly a skill that we all need to develop and refine but ironically it’s something that we rarely practice,” Cook said.

“Often times the live pitch situation in front of your boss and an important client or prospect is also your practice time.”

“So, we’ve launched the Million Dollar Pitch contest to give people at all levels a chance to show their pitching style and ability. We’re offering an Unmissable prize to the best pitch team as determined by the Million Dollar Pitch judging panel.”

Tucker said: “It should flow from start to finish. Keep it simple.”

While Rush pointed to belief in what you are saying:  “In previous competitions I’ve judged I couldn’t understand 90% of what was being said.”

Entries close this Sunday, 13 September, after which five finalists will be chosen.
